Central America: Point Honduras

Honduras, Central America

As I write this, I’m in Central America visiting our ministry partner, Point Honduras.

Crime, abuse, and economic poverty are rampant in gang-run neighborhoods here. It’s not just Honduras; I’ve seen it before in many other countries. It always discourages me to see how deeply sin has impacted humanity.

Dr. Ivan and his incredible team run an amazing ministry in four different neighborhoods of the capital, Tegucigalpa. Point Honduras provides education, food and health clinics to more than 750 children and their families.

I would never go in these neighborhoods alone. It’s not safe.

But Dr. Ivan and his team have negotiated with the gangs for safe passage in and around the neighborhoods. As long as they see the Point Honduras logo on the vehicle, then no one will mess with them. It’s at times like these I’m really glad to have friends with influence.

One morning we attended a church service in one of the neighborhoods called San Juan. If you’ve ever been to a church service in Central America, you know that it can be a very energetic and loud experience.

Today was no different.

There were more than 200 adults and children in the service, all of which had a Point Honduras connection. Being a Point kid is a real blessing.

Right in the middle of the sermon the blessing of being a Point kid was brought home to me. Glancing one row behind me, I saw something I will not easily forget. I snuck a picture with my phone. Look closely at the young girl in the photo.

She is a Point kid. She is fortunate. She is blessed.

As I was observing her, something caught my eye. The pages of her Bible were worn and tattered, not from sitting on a shelf, but from being read and used.

That’s when it hit me. This young lady could not read before becoming a Point kid. She not only reads now, but the pages of her Bible are worn from being read often.

I looked down at my own Bible. It was different. Maybe I am more careful with my Bible. Or maybe I just need to read my Bible more.

We at Orphanos are fortunate and blessed to partner with the ministries like Point Honduras. Without them, precious moments like this would never happen.

I don’t even know the young girl’s name. But I know she is blessed.

And so am I.

Grace & Peace,

Wayne Sneed
