Mozambique

One of the things I love about God’s Word is that different things stand out during different seasons of life. Like every time I read Acts, something new catches my attention. Luke writes Acts and records the Spirit’s working among believers as the gospel spreads and the early church is formed.

The second half of the book hones in on the apostle Paul and his missionary journeys. As I have meditated recently, I’ve seen over and over that as Paul visits these believers, he’s hoping to encourage and strengthen them. Those are broad terms and they look differently for each city, and yet, the main way this occurs is by Paul “declaring all that God had done with them” (Acts 14:27).

I was given a real-life picture of this missions admonishment when I opened the last email update from our partners Mark & Les Harper.

The Harpers serve in Mozambique and daily encounter some of the most extreme treatment of Christians that I’m aware of today. The country is rampant with crime and poverty, on top of recent cyclones and aggressive Islamic forces. The prince of darkness is roaring around looking for prey.

But the Harpers continue on, visiting tribes and peoples they’ve left with the gospel of Jesus Christ and stirring up churches by sharing how the Spirit has worked among other brothers and sisters. They also have rich opportunities to love on and care for children, many of whom don’t have parents and are forced to fend for themselves.

Here’s a glimpse into their work taken from their last email update:

We are here working with these people, praying for them, weeping with them and asking God to intervene, change hearts and especially perspectives, from temporal to eternal things…Pray for our brothers and sisters suffering for Christ, homeless and having lost everything, that they can never lose hope, never lose sight of Jesus, and that their eternal hope is in God’s promise of a refuge and ‘ever present help in time of trouble’ (Psalm 46:1).

I’m overwhelmed by the example the Harpers set forth not only in word, but also in deed. Please join me in prayer for their gospel work and the courage of the saints in Mozambique.
