Fun with America

God has placed on our hearts a desire to not only minister to the kids, but also to be able to minister to the volunteers. One day, we were talking to Agustin and Geno Zuñiga (the volunteers who are in charge of all of the boys at the new orphanage) and we shocked to hear that they have not had a vacation in five years and that they rarely have the chance to even leave the orphanage. They have 4 children as well (two who are still in school, one who is a volunteer teacher, and another who is studying to be a mechanic) and Geno mentioned that she would just love to be able to spend time with her family away from the orphanage. We decided to invite them to an Italian restaurant in Queretaro for Agustin's birthday and they told us that it was the first time that they had ever eaten at an Italian restaurant. Geno said that the only thing that she knew about Italian food was that it used a whole lot of cheese! It was so great to see the entire family together, eating and talking and just spending time as a family for the first time in a long time. Agustin and Geno shared with us that they were so blessed by the opportunity and could never thank God enough for the time to spend as a family outside of Pan de Vida. And they especially enjoyed getting to take home the leftovers!

This past month we had the great opportunity to be visited by a small group from a few of our supporting churches from June 14th-June 21st. Peggy, Clarence, Tim, Sara, and my Dad were all able to come on a one week trip to visit us and see the ministry that we do. Due to the fact that all of the boys are going to be moving into the new orphanage at the beginning of July, the group was in charge of fixing up the orphanage. It was the first team to be involved at the new orphanage and Agustin and Geno were so excited to have the involvement at the orphanage. They were involved with plumbing, painting, electrical work, cleaning, organizing, and everything else to fix up the orphanage. The kids were so blessed to have bathrooms that worked, to be able to see at night, and most of all to have floats for the water tanks so that they do not have to run out of water all of the time. The members of the team also had the chance to go see a little bit of Queretaro and eat some authentic Mexican food. It was a great time for everyone involved and we are so grateful that the orphanage is now "functional" and will be ready for when the younger boys move in at the beginning of July.

School officially ended on June the 28th with graduation. Ximena and I had to leave 4 days before graduation to go to a training program through Orphanos, but we left a little something behind for the graduation. For the past few months, the kids in my 9th grade class have been watching the clip "America" from "West Side Story." I changed the song a little bit and put music to it and we began practicing the song. Right whenever they had almost memorized the song, I threw them a curveball: a dialogue! Each student memorized their own part from the movie and began to shout things at each other such as "You came with your mouth open!" But I did not stop there. I decided to make it a little bit harder and called in backup: Ximena. Ximena came in and began teaching the dance moves to the kids. It was a little difficult at first as some of the girls did not want anything to do with their partner, but at the end it turned out great. This past month we received the most incredible news: my dad found us a new car. For those of you who do not know, we have had a compact car in Mexico for the past year and it was literally falling apart at the seams. Due to the fact that it takes about 30 minutes for us to drive to the new orphanage using extremely bumpy dirt roads and the fact that a lot of times we have 5 boys with us (7 people in a compact car), our car has slowly begun to break down. A few weeks ago, my dad contacted us and told us that he had found an SUV within our price range and with few mechanical problems. We were also pleased to learn that it has the same gas mileage as our current car. We purchased the car and we were blessed to have one of our supporters (Thanks Trevor!) pay to fix a few of the mechanical problems and for the title. It was an extreme blessing for us as we did not have money to pay for the extras. Currently, we are in Colorado at a training program called Mission Training International that our organization sent us to. We will be here for the next three weeks and are excited to see how God will change and mold us to better serve Him. We will hopefully be in contact with as many of you as possible during our time in the states, depending on how much free time we are given at the conference. We miss and pray for each of you and hope that this update finds you well.

Dios puso un deseo en nuestro corazón de no solamente ministrar con los niños, pero también de ministrar en medio de los voluntarios. Un día estábamos hablando con Agustín y Geno Zuñiga, los encargados de la nueva casa hogar de varoncitos, y nos sorprendió escuchar, que no han tenido vacaciones en 5 años, y casi nunca han tenido la oportunidad de salir de la casa hogar. Ellos tienen 4 hijos, dos de ellos todavía están en el colegio, uno es un maestro voluntario y el otro es un estudiante de mecánica. Geno mencionó que le encantaría tener una oportunidad para pasar tiempo con su familia fuera de la casa hogar. Decidimos invitarnos a un restaurante italiano en la ciudad para el cumpleaños de Agustín, y ellos nos dejaron que era la primera vez que iban a comer en un restaurante italiano. Geno dijo que la única cosa que ella sabía acerca de comida italiana es que ellos usan muchísimo queso. Fue muy emocionante ver a toda la familia junta, comiendo y hablando, solo pasando tiempo como familia por la primera vez en mucho tiempo. Ellos compartieron con nosotros de que habían sido muy bendecidos por esta oportunidad, y que estaban agradecidos a Dios por la oportunidad de ver a su familia junta. Especialmente gozaron el llevar a casa comida extra y preparada.

Este mes que paso, tuvimos la grandiosa oportunidad de ser visitados por un pequeño grupo de algunas de nuestras iglesias que nos apoyan. Desde 14 de Junio hasta el 21 del mismo mes. Peggy, Clarence, Timoteo, Sara, and mi papá tuvieron la oportunidad de venir por una semana y ver el ministerio que desarrollamos aquí. Por el hecho de los que los niños están mudándose a la nueva casa hogar a principios de Julio, el grupo se encargo de arreglar este nuevo lugar. Fue el primer grupo involucrado en el nuevo orfanato, Agustín y Geno estaban muy emocionados de tenerlos con ellos. Algunas de las cosas en que trabajaron fue: plomería, pintar, instalaciones eléctricas, limpieza, organización, y cada cosa más que necesitaba arreglo. Los niños fueron muy bendecidos de tener ahora baños que funcionan, la oportunidad de ver en la noche, la reparación de las cisternas de agua de manera que no tienen que quedarse sin agua todo el tiempo. Los miembros del equipo tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer la ciudad de Querétaro, y probar comida mexicana, fue un buen tiempo para cada uno que estaba presente y estamos muy felices que la casa hogar está ahora en un buen estado y listo para esperar a los chiquitos que van a llegar a finales de este mes.

La escuela oficialmente terminó a finales de Junio, Ximena y Yo tuvimos que salir 4 días antes de la graduación para poder asistir a un "programa de entrenamiento misionero". En los pasados meses los niños de noveno grado, habían estado viendo el video de un drama bailado y cantado en inglés "West Side Story" cambié la canción un poco, pusimos música y estuvimos practicando la canción. Cuando ellos casi tuvieron la canción memorizada, adjunte un dialogo no muy corto, cada estudiante memorizo sus líneas para el drama. Pero eso no fue todo, decidí hacerlo un poquito más difícil y pedí ayuda a Ximena. Ella enseñó los pasos del baile a los niños. Fue un poquito difícil al principio, porque algunas de las niñas no quisieron hacer nada con sus parejas de baile, pero todo termino bien. Este mes que paso recibimos una buena noticia, mi papá nos encontró un carro nuevo, para aquellos que no saben, tenemos un carro chiquito que hemos estado usando en México y se ha estado cayendo en pedazos (literalmente). El hecho de que tenemos que manejar 30 minutos a la nueva casa hogar, usando unas carreteras no muy agradables, y mayormente tenemos 5 de los muchachos en el carro con nosotros, nuestro carro empezó a morir. Hace algunas se manas mi papá nos llamó y dijo que encontró el carro perfecto, por un precio muy barato pero con algunos problemitas mecánicos. Compramos el carro, y hemos sido bendecidos por uno de nuestros soportes económicos "gracias Trevor" al pagar por los arreglos mecánicos que se necesitaban hacer y el costo de la legalización. Fue una gran ayuda para nosotros ya que no tenemos el dinero para pagar estos gastos extras. Actualmente estamos en Colorado en un entrenamiento que se llama "Entrenamiento Internacional para Misiones" que nuestra misión nos mando. Estaremos aquí por tres semanas, emocionados para ver como Dios va a cambiarnos y moldearnos para servirle mejor. Esperamos estar en contacto con ustedes lo mejor posiblemente durante nuestro tiempo en los Estados, depende de cuánto tiempo libre tengamos. Los extrañamos y oramos por ustedes.
