Philosophy/Overview
Orphanos Foundation tries to take a balanced approach to Short Term Mission teams. Historically, STM teams from the United States have been sent out by various Christian organizations with one of two philosophies.
The first is that they are on the field to give to the local ministry whatever they need at whatever expense it takes. This can result in burned out, emotionally and spiritually wounded team members who never want to have anything to do with missions again. It can also result in emotionally and spiritually confused people who endure unnecessary distress as it relates to their place in this world.
The second, and more prevailing philosophy, is that of desiring to disciple teams members in their relationship with God. This is evidenced in the often-heard words, "I just want my people to know how good they have it here in the states!" This could be a very selfish motivation and is often a disaster waiting to happen. Many horror stories can be told by thousands of one time hopeful ministries of mission teams that came and "discipled" their team with little thoughtful concern for the host and their investment locally. Self-seeking and careless team leaders have done untold damage to ministries worldwide with this attitude and approach.
We believe there is a better way, and many ministries have adopted this approach. It's in balancing the two philosophies under one new approach. This approach is embodied in the U.S. Standards of Excellence in Short Term Missions. These 7 standards compel us to do short term mission at a higher lever. A level worthy of God (3 John 6). Orphanos was the 7th organization to adopt the standards in 2003 when they launched. We’re proud to be members, and work hard to live up to that reputation.
The central theme of our teams is "To Serve and To Learn." Team members are taught to go with a humble servants attitude, and be prepared to serve God in whatever way He may ask.
This means we will be sensitive to cultural issues and long term ministry issues with our hosts. We will be concerned not only with our project, but also with the long term impact we are having at the host location.
We also seek to disciple team members to be "World Christians." Through scripture study, cultural studies, and on field discussions, team members are opened up to the world of missions and what God is doing for His Kingdom around the world. Its our goal that each team member will return having had a significant positive impact at the location, as well as having been significantly impacted towards knowing God and being a part of His world-wide Kingdom.
3 John 6 says, "Send them in a manner worthy of God." That's what we want to do.
